Install a network printer manually on the Infinity:One

If your school has shared network printers available you might want to enable the Infinity:One to use them and fear not this is commonly a very simple procedure.

In most cases you can add a printer simply by opening the Windows 10 settings and selecting the Devices submenu - the button Add a printer or scanner will then do the hard work for you by searching the network for available printers, assuming your device is connected to the WiFi.

However sometimes the printer that you want to add will not be immediately visible after searching the local network. This could be due to a number of reasons but not everything is lost yet: you can try to add a network printer manually!

Let's assume that your school has a Brother printer available which you are sure is configured on the local network because other devices can print with it - the first thing that you will need to install this printer on the Infinity:One is its network address which can be:

  • A numeric IP address (e.g. 10.145.0.192)

  • A printer name or hostname (e.g. printer_uaf76.ddns.terk.edu)

Unless you already have the above information available (e.g. from ICT school staff) you can use a device which has the printer pre-configured and find its address there.

This example assumes that you have access to a Windows 7 workstation where the Brother printer is already installed.

On the workstation, open the Control Panel and navigate to the submenu Devices and Printers:

Next, find the printer and right-click on its icon selecting Printer properties - the tab Ports is where the address is visible and in this case it is an IP address:

Note the address down (e.g. 10.0.0.23) and move onto your Infinity:One - in the settings select the submenu Devices:

Normally you would use the Add a printer or scanner button for the automated installation but in this case for the manual procedure you need to select the button The printer that I want isn't listed:

In the next window you can choose what method must be used to reach the printer - if you have a network name you can type it in the box Select a shared printer by name otherwise simply select the TCP/IP address option and click Next:

Nearly there! You guessed it, type in the IP address noted down earlier and click Next:

Let Windows 10 work its magic and if everything goes smooth you should finally be able to complete the printer installation without trouble!

If the above tutorial does not help or your particular situation is somewhat different from the example.. Let us know where you got stuck, we are here to help!
